E-Scribe: Hosting

A lot of clients have questions about hosting their website. They may be dissatisfied with their current hosting service, or they may be launching a new site and wanting to give it the best home possible. I try to make the host selection process as simple as possible. Having worked with a dozen or more different hosting services over the years, in 2003 I finally took control with my own server.

I'm now able to offer hosting on this server to clients. (**Note:** Hosting is available only to clients who are using my development/design services.)

The server offers:
  • 250MB of storage
  • 10GB/month of bandwidth (that's about 100,000 pageviews)
  • excellent reliability -- server's continuous "uptime" is measured in months, not days
  • commitment -- all my own sites are hosted here
  • great connectivity -- our provider has four redundant connections to the Internet backbone
  • effective, well-tested, non-annoying anti-spam measures
  • stability and security of the FreeBSD operating system

Developer Accounts

We offer special low-cost accounts for technically self-sufficient developers working on open source software projects. Specs are similar to the above; price is $25/year. Well-equipped FreeBSD development environment with Apache 2.2, PHP5, Python 2.5.x, Perl 5.8.x, Ruby 1.8.x, MySQL 5.x, Subversion, Mercurial, Darcs, etc. Send e-mail to inquire about this option.

Other options

Hosting with E-Scribe is not right for all clients. I list other recommended hosting options on a separate page.

Mailing services

Some clients need to periodically send large quantities of email to their customers or members. If you've ever tried sending a thousand messages from a desktop computer, let alone ten thousand, you know it's a nightmare. And many hosting services block the sending of mass mail as a spam-prevention measure. E-Scribe is rabidly anti-spam, but legitimate mass mailings to customers or members who request them are another matter. Mailing services start at $50 per mailing plus $5 per 1000 addresses.

Bad Choices

There are a lot of ways to go wrong with web hosting. The two most common are falling for a deal that's too good to be true, and buying bundled services that are priced far above market value. There are specific companies I don't recommend, based on bad experiences customers have had in the past. I choose not to list those services, but if you're using one of them, I'll let you know!
